Artist's Description

The Asheville area contains the former homeplace and grave of Rafael Guastavino, as well as two excellent examples of his unique building system.

Rafael Guastavino (1842-1908) an architect and builder of Spanish origin, came to Asheville, North Carolina to work on the Biltmore House in the mid-1890s. Liking the area, he bought land and built a house near Black Mountain (the present site of Christmount) and in 1905 joined forces with the local Catholic community and fellow architect R.S. Smith to design and build St. Lawrence Catholic Church. The church and the former homesite are both on the National Register Of Historic Places. Biltmore House is a National Historic Landmark.

Rafael Guastavino had emigrated to the United States from Barcelona in 1881. There he had been a successful architect and builder, designing large factories and homes for the industrialists of the region of Catalan.
